Sonny is a Professor of Marketing, Director for Research and Enterprise at the University of East London Business School, UK and Director of the Black Business Research Observatory for London (funded by the London Development Agency). He developed his research specialism in consumer studies, with special emphasis on consumerism under conditions of market failure. His current research is however driven by a desire to extend the normative boundaries of Marketing while simultaneously seeking new ways of bringing theoretical, policy- and practice-based research into symbiotic juxtaposition. In this regard, he reaches out beyond the intellectual confines of disciplinary research to a more reflexive and pluralistic engagement with the realisms of contemporary management - focusing the diverse and often culture-specific challenges of economic behaviour, and the power of individuals to create value and make choices in the marketplace both as consumers and entrepreneurs. Thus, from the broader field of consumer behaviour and its role in shaping identities, he extends his attention to the dynamics of entrepreneurship among the British ethnic minority population, particularly the entrepreneurial processes of Africans in the UK. His research in this area examines the relations between entrepreneurial identity and individual life histories in the context of everyday interactions. He is widely published and a recipient of the ANBAR Citation of Excellence for Highest Quality Rating. He is the Editor of the International Journal of Applied Management, Executive Editor of World Review of Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Development and a member of the editorial review/advisory board of several journals in Business & Management. His professional affiliations include: Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (FCIM), Fellow of the Academy of Marketing Science, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), inaugural President of the International Academy of African Business & Development, and Vice President of the Academy of World Business, Marketing & Management Development. He is external assessor and Visiting Professor at universities in Africa, Australia, UK and USA.
