Professor John Adams is the Head of the Department of Economics within the Faculty at BUE and took up the post in January 2011. He has supervised 22 PhD theses, 3 MPhil theses and examined numerous PhD students in Universities in the UK. He has published 41 research papers in UK national and international academic Journals, 4 textbooks in Economics and Research Methods (2 in Mandarin) and is a Visiting Professor at three Universities in China. Until December 2010 Professor Adams was Director of the China Research Centre at Edinburgh Napier University engaging in joint research with Chinese academics and Government organizations. He has presented research work in economics at 36 national and international conferences and has won 12 research grants from a variety of research bodies in the UK, China and elsewhere. He has been external examiner for Masters degrees in Economics at five UK Universities and undergraduate level in Finance in Hong Kong. In 2008 he was appointed the Economic Policy Adviser to Age Scotland.  He has also acted as an economic consultant to numerous public and private sector organizations. Professor Adams is a founding member of the International Institute for Investment Promotion (IIIP) based in Switzerland which provides consultancy, research and business services to Investment Promotion agencies worldwide. In 2008 he was invited to give a Public Lecture at the London School of Economics on China’s economic progress and has also been invited to give talks at the Bahrain SME society, the British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and the Bank of Mauritius. In November 2010 he was privileged to take part at an invitation only conference on Public Sector Reform hosted by the Government of Hong Kong. Professor Adams has taught economics at under and postgraduate level in South Africa, Mauritius, Hong Kong, China, Switzerland and the UK. He has also led the design and implementation of three new programmes in Economics in addition to co-designing programmes in Local Economic Development, Financial Services and Transport Planning. He has supervised numerous Masters theses in economics, economic development and marketing and his primary research interests are in the fields of economic development, SME exports and investment promotion.
